Dr. Peter Harries received his BS in 1984 from Yale University, was on a Fulbright to Germany from 1990 to 1991, and obtained his PhD in 1993 from the University of Colorado, Boulder and is presently the Assistant Dean of the Office of the Graduate Studies. He is also a tenured professor in the Department of Geology with a research specialization in paleobiology. Dr. Harries' teaching, research, and service activities largely focus on mass extinction events and comparing greenhouse and icehouse paleoclimatic, paleoceanography, and paleontologic conditions. He has received various research grants from sources such as NSF and National Geographic related to documenting greenhouse conditions as well as for leading a Research Experience for Undergraduates..
Dr. Harries has published in a broad range of top peer-reviewed publications, including Science and Nature Geoscience, as well as more paleontologically oriented journals. He is also a member of the group rewriting the Treastise on Invertebrate Paleontology volume devoted to the bivalves, one of the groups his research is focused on. He is a co-editor of the Topics in Geobiology series, on the editorial board of the Paleontologic Research Institure, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Paleontology as well as Acta Geologica Polonica. He is a member of several geology professional associations and societies and serves as Treasurer for the Paleontological Society and a member of Grants in Aid of Research committee for the international science society Sigma Xi.
