The Graduate School and the Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) are hosting the second annual Graduate Student Research Symposium to be held on Thursday, October 8, 2009. The goal of the event is to provide graduate students an opportunity to showcase their research and obtain feedback from faculty and peers. Since students in all disciplines will be involved in the event, another major goal is to foster student and faculty interactions that may result in future collaborations. Graduate students at all levels of study are welcome to participate, but those that have not previously presented at a conference are highly encouraged to take part.

Compliance Form Deadline:.................................Friday, September 11, 2009
Event Date:.................................................................Thursday, October 8, 2009

There will be a maximum of 120 applications accepted for poster presentations. Applications that meet the submission qualifications will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Students will be responsible for preparing and printing their posters (maximum size 4’ x 6’). Posters may be printed at local vendors such as Pro-Copy, Kinkos, USF Computer Store, etc. The Graduate School will make an announcement if any vendors will be offering discounts.
This year there will also be an opportunity to present orally in a session that will run concurrently with the posters. The oral presentations will be limited to a maximum time of 15 minutes (12 minutes for the presentation and 3 minutes for questions). There will be a total of 10 oral presentations during the 150-minute session. Applications that meet the submission qualifications will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis, thus applications that select ORAL PRESENTATION ONLY and are not within the first 10 to apply will be returned.
Tutorials on the preparation of posters and oral presentations can be found on the Graduate School website (http://www.grad.usf.edu/workshops.asp). In addition, the Graduate School will be hosting various preparation workshops prior to the event. All students accepted to the symposia will be notified by email with the date, time and location of these workshops.
All posters and oral presentations will be viewed by at least one faculty volunteer who will ask questions and provide informative feedback during the event. In addition, these faculty members will be able to nominate one presentation for consideration to receive a Research Excellence Award. The Research Excellence Award will consist of a plaque and $250 that will be deposited into the student’s USF account. There will be a total of six Research Excellence Awards and they will be presented at a luncheon to be held on Friday October 9, 2009 at 12:00PM. Winners will be notified on October 8th by email following the completion of the symposium.
All students that wish to participate in the Graduate Student Research Symposia are required to download, complete and submit the Graduate Student Research Symposium Compliance Form. This form must be signed by the Major Professor or Program Director and submitted to the Graduate School (Attn: Research Week; BEH304), no later than 5:00PM on September 11, 2009. FAILURE TO SUBMIT A COMPLETED AND SIGNED COPY OF THIS FORM WILL RESULT IN RETURN OF THE APPLICATION.
