Course Change Information (for course changes only): Change description to: This course is designed to review the commonly used analgesic medications in pain management clinical practice. It also reviews chemical dependency, addiction, and professional responsibilities associated with high risk medications. Change objectives to: 1. Examine central pharmacology of nociceptive transmission. 2. Explain the key principles of analgesic therapy: individualization, optimization of administration. 3. Apply the mechanisms underlying analgesia and clinical use of Opioids. 4. Apply the mechanisms underlying analgesia and clinical use of antipyretics, NSAIDs, and COX-Inhibitors. 5. Apply the mechanisms underlying analgesia and clinical use of antidepressants, and anticonvulsants in neuropathic pain. 6. Apply the mechanisms underlying analgesia and clinical use of local anesthetics, and new analgesic drugs in development. 7. Describe complementary and alternative pain management treatments. 8. Synthesize different methods of creating therapeutic regimens for pain management treatment. 9. Differentiate the key principles of opioid addiction, placebo analgesia, and detoxification. 10. Discuss wellness options and professional responsibilities for health care providers involved with high risk medications. Change Learning Outcomes to: By the completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Differentiate between the main groups of analgesics: non-opioids analgesics, opioid analgesics and adjuvant analgesics. 2. Apply the mechanisms of action for each of the main groups of analgesics 3. Explain how to provide practical and safe long-term opioid therapy for chronic pain. 4. Discuss chemical dependency and opioid addiction. 5. Explain wellness options and professional responsibilities for health care providers involved with high risk medications. 6. Apply complementary and alternative treatments to a patient’s pain management plan. 7. Synthesize management of neuropathic and non-neuropathic pain. Change topics to: 1.
