  24. Course Description: This course is designed to provide students with an interest in the field of environmental science/engineering, with the highest level of practical, hands-on environmental field training to help them advance their careers.

  29. Objectives: Students will learn preparation of effective multi-media sampling and analysis plans; strategies for sampling environmental media; field QA/QC; field equipment decontamination; sample handling and shipment; and documentation of environmental sampling events.
  30. Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to:

    • Identify field sampling equipment and general use;

    • Formulate and execute appropriate and effective sampling strategies;

    • Evaluate sampling results against the applicable State regulations;

    • Organize and apply information effectively to accomplish specific purposes; and

    • Demonstrate an understanding of the field assessment process, including the legal and business issues associated with the use of the information obtained.

  33. Course Readings, Online Resources, and Other Purchases: Copies of the requisite Standards and Rules will be made available on Canvas. Supplemental reading will be assigned. Readings will be from a variety of periodical articles and Web pages. Each assignment will include the citation information for the supplemental reading. It will be your responsibility to retrieve the item.
  34. Student Expectations/Requirements and Grading Policy: Participation 25%, Homework Assignments 50%, Final Report (Case Evaluation) 25%
  35. Assignments, Exams and Tests: 1. Homework Assignments: At least one homework assignment will be assigned every two weeks. In addition to the research, they may also require submission of a Word document. Homework assignments are based on the assumption that students have completed the week's assigned reading and class material. Assignments not submitted on time, will receive a zero. Your lowest homework assignment grade will be dropped.

    2. Final Case Evaluation: The Final Case Evaluation involves the analysis of the data gathered in the field during early trips to the Merit Processional Coatings site, and the comparison of that data to the applicable regulations resulting in a report of results to the Client. This report should include an appropriate explanation of the laboratory results including any instances of data “qualifiers” or other inconsistencies. This project is worth 100 pts.

  36. Attendance Policy: Course Attendance at First Class Meeting – Policy for Graduate Students: For structured courses, 6000 and above, the College/Campus Dean will set the first-day class attendance requirement. Check with the College for specific information.
