  24. Course Description: The course covers classroom, clinical, and on-line teaching strategies. Teaching strategies will incorporate critical thinking approaches of the student nurse educator, the nursing student, and the faculty advisor to select appropriate tools for lea

  26. What is the need or demand for this course? (Indicate if this course is part of a required sequence in the major.) What other programs would this course service? The course is a culminating course in a series of Nursing Education classes offered either as Master's degree, Graduate Certificate for those possessing a graduate degree in Nursing, or concentration in the Doctorate of Nursing Practice program. The experiences in this course are a condensed version of the skills that are required to work as faculty or in staff development in a health care institution. Those students successfully completing this course and the required practicum co-requisite will be eligible for graduation and qualification as Nurse Educators with national accreditation. Students will be eligible to sit for specialty certification. Currently, there is a national shortage of Nurse Educators to serve as faculty as well as a shortage at local colleges including USF. Additionally, there are shortages of especially trained Staff Development Specialists in institutions that have relationships with colleges for internships, residencies, and clinical rotations. Graduates of this class and program will fill the void and will be successful representatives of the Nursing Education program at USF.

Instructors will have a minimum of a Master's degree in Nursing and/or Education to teach. Those with a graduate degree in Education will have an undergraduate degree in Nursing.
  29. Objectives: 1. Describe teaching strategies most appropriate to learner settings.

    2. Evaluate the efficacy of teaching strategies in differing student populations.

    3. Demonstrate the ability to choose appropriate tools for learning and assessment.

    4. Design a project for learning centered activity for the classroom, clinical, or online setting.

    5. Evaluate the efficacy of the project in light of student outcomes.

    2. The student will research and write an evidence based paper on teaching strategies in select learner settings.

    3. The student will prepare a student-centered presentation or project specific to the learner environment.

    4. Evaluate learning tools and development of learning tools for student nurses.

    5. The student will participate in online discussions and collaboration with faculty, outside agencies, and other students to evaluate teaching strategies in various settings.

    Projects and papers may be submitted two weeks prior to the final due date for formative evaluation. Please notify the instructor via email of a submission so that feedback can be timely.

    The practicum of the course will be graded pass/fail and will not affect GPA.

    Students enrolled as Graduate Students in the College of Nursing must attain a "B" for a passing grade.

  35. Assignments, Exams and Tests: 1. Discussion Board participation: there will be ten required postings for full credit for this portion of the grade. Deadline for posting will be on the module that the discussion board is belongs to but will are expected to be complete prior to final exam week.

    2. 6 quizzes in multiple choice format. Students may take the quiz multiple times until the final week of classes. Quiz grades will be considered final during final exam week.

    3. An evidence based learning strategies paper with formative feedback from the instructor if student elects. Paper may also be posted to discussion board for viewing by other students for feedback and discussion.

    4. Student-centered individual project will take the form of a classroom, on-line, or clinically based presentation tailored to the learning experience and student population. Formative evaluation is available. The date for presentation of individual project should be submitted a week ahead of time. Recording of "live" presentations should be made for instructor review.

  36. Attendance Policy: Course Attendance at First Class Meeting – Policy for Graduate Students: For structured courses, 6000 and above, the College/Campus Dean will set the first-day class attendance requirement. Check with the College for specific information. This policy is not applicable to courses in the following categories: Educational Outreach, Open University (TV), FEEDS Program, Community Experiential Learning (CEL), Cooperative Education Training, and courses that do not have regularly scheduled meeting days/times (such as, directed reading/research or study, individual research, thesis, dissertation, internship, practica, etc.).     In the event of an emergency, it may be necessary for USF to suspend normal operations.   37. Policy on Make-up Work: 1.) Assignments may be turned in late with permission of the instructor. No make-up assignments are available.

    2) Students who anticipate absence or inability to complete assignments due to religious observation or other serious commitment should notify instructor in the first two weeks of classes to make alternate arrangements. In the case of unanticipated events such as family or medical emergencies, the student is expected to notify the instructor within a two day period Monday to Friday and on weekends if possible so alternate arrangements can be made.

    3) The University of South Florida has an account with an automated plagiarism detection service which allows instructors to submit student assignments to be checked for plagiarism. Instructors reserve the right to 1) request that assignments be submitted as electronic files and 2) electronically submit assignments to Turnitin.com. Assignments are compared automatically with a huge database of journal articles, web articles, and previously submitted papers. The instructor receives a report showing exactly how a student’s paper was plagiarized.
