- Course Description: This course focuses on application of holistic nursing concepts and principles related to care of a group of patients with potentially life threatening problems. Clinical experiences may take place in hospitals or a variety of community settings.

- What is the need or demand for this course? (Indicate if this course is part of a required sequence in the major.) What other programs would this course service? This is a practicum class focused on preparing the student nurse in the last semester to become more familiar with the role of RN. The student’s knowledge level is elevated to the functions of a RN on a daily basis. The student, along with preceptor initiates a plan of care for patients in her care; involving when necessary the family members present. The student performs “passing the baton” to oncoming shifts and staff members; incorporates using Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation (SBAR). Use of electronic medical record (EMR) for documentation, and to retrieve such information as history and physical, lab results, vital signs, physician’s orders. Familiarity with rounding on patients as part of his or her daily duties, and how this contributes to elevating the care provided daily

- Objectives: At the conclusion of this course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate competencies of the associate degree graduate nurse.
2. Develop and use critical thinking skills.
3. Take on the role of the primary nurse for his or her patients.
4. Develop use of SBAR, and use when reporting to providers and
colleagues.
5. Complete medication administration and all aspects of client safety.
6. Complete 120 clinical hours over three weeks, by matching the
schedule of his or her preceptor.

2. Discuss the patient’s diagnosis, medication regime, interventions
required, and patient education.
