  24. Course Description: The purpose of this course is to examine the application of nursing practice into interdisciplinary care. The role of all disciplines is explored with focus on professional relationships and communication among healthcare providers.

In today's complex and evolving healthcare environment, nurses must successfully partner with other disciplines in order to deliver the best possible patient care. The Institute of Medicine's report in 2011 suggested nursing education be transformed in a number of ways to prepare nursing graduates to work collaboratively and effectively with other healthcare professionals. This course will provide nursing students with the opportunity to work with students in other disciplines, as well as introduce them to the many benefits of interdisciplinary approaches to care and how they improve patient outcomes as well as satisfaction.

  29. Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

    1. Examine the role of all healthcare professionals in interdisciplinary care.

    2. Identify ways to incorporate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care.

    3. Discuss how effective collaboration among disciplines impacts patient outcomes.

    1. Use classroom and online discussion forums for facilitating student communication.

    2. Perform self assessments to examine feelings of interdisciplinary approaches to care.

    3. Develop an interdisciplinary care plan.

    4. Review case studies to determine how interdisciplinary collaboration would have impacted patient outcomes.
