  24. Course Description: This class is strictly practicum-based and students will apply knowledge obtained throughout the program to the patient care setting. The student will follow an assigned preceptor’s schedule to gain a better understanding of continuity of care.

A specific course set aside for a Final Nursing Preceptorship enriches the students' clinical experience, which makes them more readily experienced at the bedside and marketable for careers. The design of this course includes comprehensive care plans, which strengthen critical thinking skills, and it also integrates the use of evidence-based practice in the completion of the final change project. This course is designed to shape highly competitive and marketable nurses, thus reflecting on the competitive nature of the University's College of Nursing.

  28. What qualifications for training and/or experience are necessary to teach this course? (List minimum qualifications for the instructor.) Minimum of Master's Degree in Nursing. ACLS certification is preferred/BLS is required. Active Registered Nurse license for the state of Florida.
  29. Objectives: By the completion of the course, the student will be able to:

    1. Safely and effectively manage the care of five to six patients under the direct supervision of the preceptor.

    2. Develop appropriate nursing care plans for five to six patients according to disease state and progression.

    3. Collaborate with the healthcare team as well as the patients, families, and communities to provide client-centered care that promotes wellness and healing.

    4. Demonstrate critical thinking for decision-making in nursing practice.

  30. Learning Outcomes: 1. Engage in interprofessional collaboration with physicians, physical therapists, nutritionists, and case management to determine safe and effective treatment for selected patient.

    2. Participate in continuous personal and professional development.

    3. Apply theories of caring, health promotion, and leadership and management to meet the health care needs of the patient and families as appropriate.

  33. Course Readings, Online Resources, and Other Purchases: Readings will be posted to Canvas at the discretion of the instructor. Students are required to be in full uniform at the clinical site at all times. Full uniform includes a stethoscope and watch with second hand.
  34. Student Expectations/Requirements and Grading Policy: This course is designed as a point system: 1 point = 1%.

    Weekly journal entries = 10%

    Comprehensive care plans (total of 5) = 50%

    Final change project = 40%

    Final grade is S/U.

  35. Assignments, Exams and Tests: A combination of instructional methods and learning activities will be utilized in this course to engage students and appropriately reflect the learning goals as well as students’ developmental needs. This combination will include hands on clinical experience with an assigned preceptor, journal entries, comprehensive care plans, and a final change project.

    Clinical Experience: Each student must complete a total of 120 hours with an assigned Registered Nurse.

    Journal entries: Weekly journal entries serve as a self-reflection tool and will not be graded based on content, but rather will serve as a means for guidance and self-improvement.

    Comprehensive care plans: Each student will individually submit a total of five comprehensive care plans, which serve to evaluate a patient’s plan of care.

    Final Change Project: Each student will individually create one change project based on an identified need of the unit where they complete their preceptorship. This need may be either a staff or patient learning opportunity, revision of a policy or procedure, and so forth. Students must first seek topic approval before completing the project.

    No final exam or interim exams in this course.

  36. Attendance Policy: Course Attendance at First Class Meeting – Policy for Graduate Students: For structured courses, 6000 and above, the College/Campus Dean will set the first-day class attendance requirement. Check with the College for specific information. This policy is not applicable to courses in the following categories: Educational Outreach, Open University (TV), FEEDS Program, Community Experiential Learning (CEL), Cooperative Education Training, and courses that do not have regularly scheduled meeting days/times (such as, directed reading/research or study, individual research, thesis, dissertation, internship, practica, etc.).
