This course is relevant in creating nursing leaders of tomorrow by examining current critical issues in healthcare delivery and population health with the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

  29. Objectives: 1. Analyze how policies influence the structure and financing of healthcare, practice, and health outcomes.

    2. Examine the effect of legal and regulatory processes on nursing practice, healthcare delivery and outcomes.

    3. Apply ethical decision-making models to issues encountered in contemporary healthcare settings.

    4. Interpret research for policy makers and stakeholders.

    5. Design interventions and strategies based on a synthesis of broad ecological, global and social determinants of health and epidemiological data.

    6. Integrate clinical prevention and population health concepts in the development of culturally relevant health education.

  30. Learning Outcomes: 1. Student will be able to evaluate an institution's policy regarding the implementation of new point of care technology, including issues related to cost, privacy, patient/provider risks and ethics.

    2. Student will be able to evaluate the Electronic Health Record at a practice site in regards to the use of language and standardized terminology that does or does not support advanced nursing practice.

    3. Student will be able to evaluate a system management practice at the micro or macro level (from socio-economic, environmental, political and cultural contexts) and assess the impact on the health outcomes of a vulnerable patient population.

    4. Student will be able to demonstrate scholarly writing on a policy issue that advocates for a solution that is politically feasible and economically viable.
