  24. Course Description: This course examines healthcare and its delivery system via political, economic, legal and ethical situations. Particular emphasis is on written analyses of legal and ethical influences/dilemmas related to nursing practice.

  26. What is the need or demand for this course? (Indicate if this course is part of a required sequence in the major.) What other programs would this course service? As healthcare changes, it is important for future healthcare providers to be aware of and adapt to these shifts. Healthcare not only encompasses clinical expertise, but also legal and economic acumen, as well public policy changes and the ever-increasing global impact of healthcare.

    The Affordable Care Act, Medicare/Medicaid, and other government healthcare policies do affect practice nationally as well as locally. Trends current in healthcare can impact care and create new ethical dilemmas in today's healthcare arena.

    Students will be introduced to various topical issues in healthcare, and have a broad-based understanding of these effects and impacts in practice.

  28. What qualifications for training and/or experience are necessary to teach this course? (List minimum qualifications for the instructor.) Minimum degree is a master's in nursing education or in public health with an emphasis on nursing. May also have a doctorate in nursing, public health or a juris doctorate with an emphasis in healthcare. Any other certifications such as a legal nurse certificate would be helpful, but not necessary.

    The instructor should be proficient in classroom and online teaching, and possess strong communication skills and knowledge in the course content.

  29. Objectives: At the end of this course students will:

    Examine the roles of nursing from political, legal, economic and ethical situations.

    Identify at least one legal and one economic impact facing nursing today.

    Discuss at least two ethical dilemmas in nursing and the impact on nursing care.

    Discuss one component of the Affordable Care Act, and how it will influence nursing care and delivery.

    Learn how to compose a letter to a county, state, or government politician about a healthcare issue affecting the state you live in.

    Analyze current healthcare trends in relation to political, legal, economical, and ethical application.

  30. Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course students will:

    Students will be able to recognize the external influences that may affect nursing care and how the healthcare delivery system adapts or fails. Students will write a paper on the Affordable Care Act and one aspect of healthcare, as well as write position/opinion papers on legal, economic, and/or ethical dilemmas faced in healthcare.

  34. Student Expectations/Requirements and Grading Policy: Students must have access to a computer with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Students must have a USF email account. Firefox webrowser is the recommended browser.

    Grading policy is based upon points accumulated as follows:

    Discussion board participation is 10 points

    Four papers worth a total of 90 points

Attendance Policy: Course Attendance at First Class Meeting – Policy for Graduate Students: For structured courses, 6000 and above, the College/Campus Dean will set the first-day class attendance requirement.
