  24. Course Description: This course will prepare the student to assess and recognize various cardiac rhythms as presented on telemetry strips. The student will be prepared to offer explanation of conditions contributing to various rhythms and the dangers of each to the patient.

  25. Please briefly explain why it is necessary and/or desirable to add this course: Needed to compete with national trends
  26. What is the need or demand for this course? (Indicate if this course is part of a required sequence in the major.) What other programs would this course service? This course gives a solid foundation and understanding of cardiac rhythms which is a necessary skill for all nurses but especially at the Graduate level. In speaking with Clinical Leaders at various hospitals, this is a fundamental skill that seems to be lacking in our nursing leaders of tomorrow. Therefore, this course would be a logical inclusion into the Graduate programs in order to produce solidly skilled nurses.
  27. Has this course been offered as Selected Topics/Experimental Topics course? If yes, how many times? No
  28. What qualifications for training and/or experience are necessary to teach this course? (List minimum qualifications for the instructor.) Acute cardiac care within the past 2 years (minimum 1 year experience)

Prior telemetry monitoring experience (minimum 1 year)

Successful completion of EKG course with certification

  29. Objectives: Following a class on Basic EKG, the student will be able to correctly identify the top three most commonly found cardiac rhythms. The student will also demonstrate proper placement of leads using class mannequin. Student will also be able to recognize lethal rhythms by evaluating telemetry strips used in class. The student will also provide match conditions and dangers that contribute to various cardiac rhythms.
  30. Learning Outcomes: Correctly and efficiently identify cardiac rhythms and become proficient in lead placement to obtain accurate EKG reading. Successfully match cardiac rhythms to patient conditions and document at least two dangers of these rhythms.
  31. Major Topics: Correct lead placement, analysis of cardiac rhythms, identification of lethal cardiac rhythms, determining cardiac rhythms contributing to patient condition and recognize the dangers of these rhythms to the patient.
  32. Textbooks: Author, Arthur (2012). Basic EKG Rhythm (4th Edition). Philadelphia: Lippincott
  33. Course Readings, Online Resources, and Other Purchases: Required: Calipers to measure rhythm
  34. Student Expectations/Requirements and Grading Policy: Correct demonstration of lead placement 25%

Correct analysis of cardiac rhythms 25%

    Verbalizing lethal cardiac rhythms 20%

Assessment of rhythm strip Final Exam 30%

Assignments are due on or before the due date posted. If turned in late, there will be a loss of 5% points from assignment unless previously excused as late by instructor. There are no make up assignments in this course. Student must receive a grade of at least 80% in order to pass this course. There will be no assignments for extra credit.

  35. Assignments, Exams and Tests: Assigned readings in text

Correct demonstration of lead placement 25%
