  24. Course Description: The purpose of this course is for PhD students in Government admitted into candidacy to develop a dissertation proposal, approved by their supervisory committee, in their chosen area of research

  29. Objectives: 1. Develop a dissertation proposal that would ensure a well conceptualized, theoretically appropriate and methodologically rigorous dissertation proposal.

    2. Focus on designing & evaluating empirical research.

    3. Produce a dissertation proposal that includes, but is not limited to, stating a research problem, connecting appropriate theory to data & data collection. A 7000 level independent Study project with student’s major Professor and Committee members is the best way of achieving this objective.

  30. Learning Outcomes: Student will produce a well written rigorous dissertation proposal that will be defended in front of his/her dissertation committee. Verbal and written communication of the proposal will be defended to ensure student’s proper grasp of linkage of research problem to concepts, theory, and relevant data; and to ensure that research problem is researchable and analysis will satisfy inductive/deductive thinking, and proper use of disciplinary & interdisciplinary concepts.
