  24. Course Description: The Independent Study course in the School of Hotel & Restaurant Management permits a graduate student to enrich his/her interest in a particular area of specialized hospitality knowledge, research, and/or practice.

  26. What is the need or demand for this course? (Indicate if this course is part of a required sequence in the major.) What other programs would this course service? This course is needed for students to enrich his/her interest in a particular area of specialized hospitality knowledge, research, and/or practice in an area where there is no existing course. This course will only serve SHRM graduate students.

  29. Objectives: The intended course objectives will be developed by instructor and will depend on specific directed independent study. A School faculty member will approve the course syllabus, direct the independent study, and evaluate the outcome of the study. The activity may include, but is not limited to, involvement in a research project, a literature review, preparation of a paper for presentation and/or publication, and/or involvement in a unique learning opportunity, etc. All independent studies/directed study/guided special project, must result in some tangible product, such as a paper, case studies, etc. The amount of course credit provided for the Independent Study should be clearly linked to the amount of work involved in the course.
