    Prerequisites

    Accepted into the GEP Doctoral program; EVR 7921 is completed by all students that designate Environmental Science and Policy as their subject area; and permission of the studentís major professor.

    Course Description

    The dissertation is an original contribution to scholarship. The research is performed under the guidance of the major professor, which determines how many dissertation hours are completed (maximum 42 hours).

    A. Please briefly explain why it is necessary and/or desirable to add this course.

    The Geography and Environmental Science and Policy Doctoral Program at the University of South Florida is designed to develop and enhance a student's knowledge and ability to conduct original independent research that makes a scholarly contribution to the

    B. What is the need or demand for this course? (Indicate if this course is part of a required sequence in the major.) What other programs would this course service?

    All students that are admitted to the Geography and Environmental Science and Policy doctoral program will be required to complete a dissertation. Students in the program whose main area of concentration involves geography will complete his/her dissertation hours by completing a certain number of credit hours, as decided by the studentís major professor and supervisory committee, of GEO 7980 (Doctoral Dissertation Research). Students in the program whose main area of concentration involves Environmental Science and Policy will complete his/her dissertation hours by completing a certain number of credit hours, as decided by the studentís major professor and supervisory committee, of EVR 7980 (Doctoral Dissertation Research. No other programs will utilize these courses.

    No. The Doctoral Program in Geography and Environmental Science and Policy began operation in Spring 2005, and no students have yet advanced to the stage where registering for this course is appropriate.

    D. What qualifications for training and/or experience are necessary to teach this course? (List minimum qualifications for the instructor.)

    The instructor must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in Geography or a related discipline to be the major professor for students taking GEO 7980. The instructor must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy or a related discipline to be the major professor for students taking EVR 7980. They must also have a clear understanding of the scientific method, its practical applications, proposal writing, and presentation skills. The instructor must also have a proven record of research, as well as experience in structuring, supervising, and obtaining funding for academic research, and experience in mentoring of advanced graduate students.

    A. Objectives

    Completion of a doctoral dissertation should foster the following: An understanding of scientific inquiry; a thorough knowledge of the structure, history, issues, methods, and theoretical construct of that portion of the discipline(s) wherein the research is proposed to make an original scholarly contribution; proficiency in appropriate analytical and technical skills as related to the dissertation research; and competency in communicating the results of academic research.

    B. Learning Outcomes

    Upon completion of the dissertation, the student should be able to understand and use the scientific method; write a detailed proposal, and outline for the dissertation; write a dissertation, under the guidance of the major professor and the supervisory committee that is acceptable to them and that follows guidelines outlined by the Graduate School. They should also understand how his/her research fits into the framework of scientific inquiry. They should demonstrate a mastery of theories and application of methods in their chosen specialty.

    C. Major Topics

    Topics will be specific to each student's advanced original research in a topic area approved by the Major Professor and Supervisory Committee.

    D. Textbooks

    All scholarly literature in the student's chosen field is expected to be identified and mastered. The student will identify this literature in the course of demonstrating mastery of the current state of knowledge in that field.
