Office of Postdoctoral Affairs

Student Loan Deferment Requests

Although the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) can process loan deferment forms and submit them to the loan guaranteeing agency for review, it is the agency who is responsible for determining if the postdoctoral appointment meets its deferral criteria. The postdoctoral scholar should print the forms from the loan agency's website, complete, sign, and submit them to the OPA for review of postdoctoral status. Please include an addressed stamped envelope made out to the loan agency. The OPA will mail the form directly to the agency. Since these documents contain Social Security information, they will not be emailed or faxed. If the postdoctoral scholar wishes to receive a copy, they will need to include a self addressed, stamped envelope or provide the campus mail code of where to send the copy.

NIH Loan Repayment Programs

The NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs) encourage promising researchers and scientists to pursue research careers by repaying up to $35,000 of their qualified student loan debt each year, through Extramural LRP's (for researchers and scientists conducting research at universities and other nonprofit organizations) and Intramural LRP's (for NIH employee researchers). There is also a separate Student Loan Repayment Program available to certain NIH employees who are not research scientists. To be eligible to participate in the programs, the postdoctoral scholar's research goals need to be within the mission of the NIH and scope of the LRP's. The postdoctoral scholar does not need an NIH grant to participate in the NIH Loan Repayment Programs. More information can be found at www.lrp.nih.gov.
