Zachary
Mason
Major:
Comparative Political Economy
What year are you currently in: 2nd year
Expect to graduate: May 2007
Why did you choose USF?
After my grandfather passed away in the summer
of 2004, I decided to move back to the United States
and live near my grandmother in St. Petersburg. I
had always planned to attend grad school and this
relocation near USF granted me this opportunity.
What is your area of research/interest?
As is true for so many students, my area of research
is only a small part of my much broader academic
interests. As of late, my research pursuit has
pertained to comparative political economy and third
world sustainable development focusing particularly
on the regions of Africa and Latin America. More
broadly though, my interests range from development
issues economic growth to more localized problems in
realm of health and poverty. I am currently writing
my thesis on the economic growth of Asia and Latin
America in the field of comparative political
economy.
In 5 years what do you hope to be doing?
Honestly, it is so hard to say. If you would have
asked me 5 years ago where I saw myself I can’t say
it was here at USF. What I can say though is that I
love being in the academic environment and I love
working to improve the lives of people who need help
in this world. I wouldn’t give that up for anything.
So, I guess it would be logical to say that I see
myself teaching and working in the field of
development in either Africa or Latin America.
If you had the time or the money—which charity or
volunteer effort would you support? Do you volunteer
now—if so with who?
I have currently accepted a volunteer position in
sub-Saharan Africa working with the
Peace Corps set
to begin in June 2007. Additionally, I have been
offered another volunteer position with a Mayan run
non-profit organization on the Rio Dulce in eastern
Guatemala teaching Spanish, Culinary Arts, and
health education. I am currently seeking out any
would be philanthropists looking to create (fund)
hands on education, health, and water sanitation
development programs in Africa or Latin America.
Degree Seeking: Masters or Doctoral or
Specialists?
Master’s Degree
Biography:
I am a 22 year old Boston native who has lived in
Florida for a little over a year. I obtained a
Bachelor of Political Science from the
University of Massachusetts in the spring
of 2004. After I finished my undergraduate work in
Boston I moved to Avignon France where I cooked in a
restaurant for a year. I moved to Florida in August
2005. I am currently in the Master's Program in
Comparative Political Economy
studying sustainable development focusing and
political formation focusing on Africa and Latin
America. After I defend my thesis in the spring of
2007 I plan to live and work in Africa and apply to
a Ph.D program.
