Joyonna
Gamble-George
Major:
Clinical Microbiology &
Immunology
What year are you currently in:
1st year graduate student
Expect to graduate: May 2008
Why did you choose USF?
The biggest influence in my choice of USF for
graduate school was my father. Having attended USF,
my father expressed to me the many things USF had to
offer that coincided with my future career
aspirations.
What is your area of research/interest?
My area of research interest include health care
disparities, health policy and programs, and
virology, particularly HIV and herpes viruses.
In 5 years what do you hope to be doing?
Upon completion of my MSMS in Clinical Microbiology
and Immunology, I aspire to enter the medical field
and obtain a career that encompasses both the
clinical and administrative aspects of health care
management within the next five years.
If you had the time or the money—which charity or
volunteer effort would you support? Do you volunteer
now—if so with who?
If I had the time or money, I would support
charities geared toward rebuilding areas affected by
Hurricane Katrina, especially entities such as the
Association of Community
Organizations for Change Now (ACORN)
and
Habitat for Humanity
that are assisting in the revitalization of New
Orleans and relocation of displaced families back to
their homes. I currently volunteer through various
on-campus organizations such as
USF Health Service Corps
and
Volunteer USF. In
the past I have participated in a wide range of
community service projects that center on issues
addressing poverty, HIV/AIDS, health, revitalization
of impoverished communities and the environment, and
the elderly and homebound. The organizations I have
volunteered through include, but are not limited to,
Tampa Bay Dream Center, Metropolitan Ministries,
John Knox Village, Hope Lodge, Ivy Reading AKAdemy
at West Tampa Elementary School, Weinberg Village,
Tampa Bay AIDS Network, and Central Alabama Veterans
Health Care System.
Degree Seeking: Masters or Doctoral or
Specialists?
I have already received
a
Master of Health
Administration (MHA)
from
USF College of Public Health.
I am pursuing a
Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS) from
USF College of Medicine.
