The short answer: Find a mentor, network with students, be diligent. A longer
answer: Apply for the
SUS/USF Summer Program where we have a 6-week program on
“how to be successful in graduate school.”

When should I apply for Graduate School?
Answer:
Start researching graduate programs at least a year in advance. Generally
programs admit in the Fall semester of each year. You should give yourself time
to prepare for and complete any required entrance examinations and secure
financial support (ranging from Fellowships, to private grants, Graduate
Assistantships, or loans).

When should I apply for loans?
Answer:
You should complete the on-line
FAFSA application as soon as
possible, ideally on January 2nd of each year.

Your interests should drive your decisions. Is this a discipline that matches my
interests? Is the faculty in the discipline doing the kind of research I’m
interested in? Do they nurture their students? Do they have a track record in
graduating minority students?

field and do not forget to visit the
department's website for further information.

Can I enter directly in a PhD program from undergraduate?
Answer:
Many programs allow direct entrance, you earn your masters degree along the way.
