2016 Outstanding Graduate Faculty Mentor Award Recipients

Recipient Pamela Hallock Muller, Ph.D.
Professor of Marine Science
College of Marine Science
Comments from Students
"Dr. Hallock's most lasting contribution comes from her profound and positive impact on the lives and careers of hundreds of students and collaborators over the last four decades. Within all of these interactions, Pam quite naturally and inconspicuously sets an example of tolerance, respect, and working for the greater good."
- Melanie McField, Ph.D.

In Their Own Words
"My philosophy as a graduate mentor includes (a) gumption is the single most important quality in a graduate student; (b) with multiple scientific and environmental management agencies in our area, opportunities can be found for motivated individuals; and (c) my responsibility is to provide opportunities for, and to effectively train, science professionals. Mentoring has been my passion since I began my academic career nearly 40 years ago. My objectives are to guide each individual to discover her/his direction in life and, along the way, contribute to scientific knowledge and develop scientifically literate citizens. In the broadest terms, I see science as a form of self-expression, creating the possibility of sustaining a habitable planet for future generations."
- Pamela Hallock Muller, Ph.D.

Honorable Mention Sara Green, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Sociology
College of Arts & Sciences
Comments from Students
"[Dr. Green] has helped me understand how my personal and professional lives are inextricably intertwined, and rather than fight to separate the two, embrace their intermingling and use it to my advantage. She inspires me to be available to my own students as a source of personal and academic support, and her patience and generosity with me has prompted me to be patient and generous with my own students as well."
- Melissa Jane Welch

Honorable Mention Michael Lynch, Ph.D.
Professor of Criminology
College of Behavioral & Community Sciences
Comments from Students
"Dr. Lynch is a great mentor since he encourages students’ intellectual curiosity and helps them develop the curiosity to make an academic achievement...he understands the psychological pressures and difficulties many graduate students suffer from and helps them emotionally relax and be comfortable."
- Hyojong Song
