Tutorials: Getting Your Page Numbers to Line Up on the Right in Your Table of
Contents
In your Table of Contents and any Lists of Figures, the University requires that your page numbers be flush right: they should align, one on top of the other, on the right-hand side. You can easily arrange your manuscript to do this automatically by setting a right tab in Microsoft Word.
This tutorial assumes you are already familiar with the basic workings of a desktop computer, such as the use of a keyboard and mouse.
To begin, open Microsoft Word. For maximum ease, you'll want to turn the rulers on if they're not already on. To do this, go to View --> Ruler.
Your rulers are now on, and are visible at the top and left of your page (see below).
Setting a right tab will allow you to tab to a final position to type in your page numbers and align them flush right. To set a tab, look at the ruler and decide where you want your numbers to fall. Click on the ruler at that position.
There is now a dark "L" shape where you marked. To edit the properties of this new tab (which defaults to a Left Tab), double-click on the "L" shape.
Under Alignment, click on "Right." Hit OK.
To use your new right tab, type in your chapter or headings or sub-headings, then hit the Tab button your keyboard. Your cursor will be moved automatically to the new tab you've set, where you can type your numbers. The numbers will now be aligned to the right.
You can also use the right tab to set dot leaders: the small trail of dots that connect the chapters to the numbers in some manuscript styles. To do this, double-click on the "L" shape on the ruler.
Word will display the Tabs dialogue. Under "Leader," select 2..... and then hit OK.
Now, after you type your chapters and hit the Tab key, Word will automatically insert the dot leader.
