Tutorials: Converting Your Word Document with Acrobat

Providing you are on a computer with the full versions of both Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word, converting your Word document to Acrobat is as easy as clicking a button.

This tutorial assumes you are already familiar with the basic workings of a desktop computer, such as the use of a keyboard and mouse.

To begin, open your document in Microsoft Word.

The Convert Button

Most installations of Acrobat 5.0 will endow MS Word with two buttons in the upper left with the Acrobat logo. The leftmost will convert your document and save it. The rightmost will convert it and email it. Click the leftmost button. If you are using Acrobat 6.0, you just need to print the document to the "Adobe PDF" printer that was installed.

Or the Acrobat Convert Menu

Sometimes the toolbar is hidden, taking the buttons with it. If you don't see the two buttons in the corner, go to the menu bar and select the rightmost menu, the Acrobat Menu, and choose Convert to Adobe PDF.

Saving Your PDF

You will be asked where you want to save your new PDF. Choose the directory you want it stored in, name it appropriately (remember for upload, you don't want any spaces or special characters) and hit Save.

The PDF Printing Status Box

Your document will flash a few times, and several small status boxes will pop up as Acrobat creates tags and prints your document. This process may take a while, particularly if you have a large document or one with several images or tables. Once the final status box, 'Printing' disappears, your document is done. You can now go to the directory you indicated, double-click it and read it.
